I use gpm occasionally.

Just last week an upgrade on one of my laptops left me with no working X
thanks to kernel
and xorg changes.

So I spent almost a week using wicd-curses, lynx and gpm. It's the easiest
way to
cut/paste things between virtual consoles.

The rarity with which you use something or the length of time since someone
had some
reason to modify it should really not automatically imply "...will probably
have to go".
That's user-unfriendly in the extreme.

It is a tool seldom used. But the day you do have to use it... oh my, what a
blessing it is.
