Re: [opensuse] Separate /usr?
Dave Howorth said the following on 08/09/2012 08:43 AM:

Just use dirvish or one of the many other backup programs that will back
up arbitrary parts of your file tree. In the case of dirvish, you can
use any pattern that rsync understands to choose files, and use as many
patterns as you want.

The operative thing here is 'FILE TREE".

What if you have a high performance database (e,g, MySQL) that uses a
raw partition? Or some other application. What if you're backing up an
encrypted partition in its raw form? (Rather than a set of individually
encrypted files or a file that is going to be mounted with losetup.)

And "back up onto what?"
Oh, right, a DVD. But then you have to build the ISO image of the tree
you've copied/built using RSYNC.
Or tape?

Well OK, some people like having lots of programs to fiddle with,
scripts, config files, GUIs. I don't. So bite me.

Life's a bitch. Then you die.
Then you get re-incarnated and it starts all over again only worse.
And it doesn't matter if you don't believe in reincarnation,
Life's still a bitch.
