Don't know if this is related, but a kernel or two ago, (linux-3.1.3?),
several
distros stopped including dev links by default (e.g. /dev/sr0 -> cdrom, etc.)

don't know what all this encompasses, but this stuff was supposed to close
some
security holes and be moved to udev rules IIRC or be left to the admin to
create
the links as needed...
