I had to add nomodeset to startup, then I get KDE up. Where do I put
nomodeset, so I do not have to do it every time I start.

you can add it via yast2 -> system -> bootloader -> edit
add "nomodeset" (w/o "s) to "Optional Kernel Command Line Parameter"

or from cl:
yast -> system -> bootloader -> edit
and as above
