can probably verify what Thunderbird is sending using wireshark (if you
turn off SSL/TLS for a moment) so you can see if it's modified on server
side.

For example, I use gmail to send with my opensuse identity. Ie, the account
is gmail, and I have some added identities. The From is correct, as you can
see in this message, but inside there is a header that shows the main identity.
