[opensuse] adding new hard drive and changing cd/dvd writer
Hi everyone,

I want to add a new hard drive in order to set up RAID to back up my system. The problem is my CD/DVD writer is a SATA connection, and there are only 2 SATA ports on my motherboard. So I have purchased a CD/DVD writer that connects by IDE and I plan to replace the SATA DVD writer with my new IDE DVD writer. Then I will put my 2nd hard drive in the 2nd SATA port.

This first question only has to do with getting the hardware to work, and not with setting up RAID. I will deal with that after I get the hardware to work.

If I just shut my computer off and replace the hardware, can I simply boot back up and expect that everything will automatically mount and configure itself correctly?

How does Linux look at what drive is what?

What files do I need to look at/modify in order to make sure my new hardware is running properly?

Thanks
George
