[opensuse] 11.2/Evergreen post-updates DNS trouble
Night before last I got everything updated, and right before the last 2 packages downloaded and installed, everything outside my router became unreachable, with zypper giving no clues as to why everything requiring access to the net was failing. I though maybe rebooting would help, but it didn't. Eventually I solved the immediate problem by deleting all nameservers from /etc/resolv.conf, and putting in it only my router's IP.

Now I think I may be seeing fallout from trying to use my router's DNS service. Gecko, wget & curl are getting Earthlink 404 HTML pages instead of announcing 404 normally if I try to fetch a bad URL, or if trying to access a generic mirror that randomly resolves to various actual servers (e.g. download.mozilla.org).

What does nscd actually do? Does it actually need to be running on a home network server? Chkconfig -l shows "on" in 3 & 5, but I don't remember ever actually setting it that way, or ever selecting it to be installed in the first place.

What could have been included in updates to precipitate this? Was the inception of the problem's timing concurrent with updates just a fluke?

Are there DNS IPs available I can substitute for those provided by Earthlink, so that I can get past Earthlink's idiotic/broken help pages that load instead of the browsers' standard 404 pages when loading a bad URL is attempted? Those stupid Earthlink pages all but prevent editing the typing or other mistakes in a bad URL in the browsers' urlbars.
