But is this really a fork? The FAQ http://www.documentfoundation.org/faq/
makes it sound like they are the new main branch, and were more or less

It's being called a fork in most news feeds.... for example:

I suppose technically it is a fork, but as far as I can tell, there are
no developers who will continue to be developing on the Oracle branch.
Oracle has been invited to donate the brand name to the new Foundation
so that they can continue using the name "OpenOffice"; otherwise they
will switch to "LibreOffice". http://lwn.net/Articles/407383

I wonder what this means for go-oo that Novell used to run? Will those
changes get merged?
