grub>intrd /boot/int<tab>.img
intrd /boot/int.img

Error 27: Unrecognized command

So it stalls here.

initrd is a Grub command. intrd is not.

But that still seems like the place where things hang. I went through the
sequence of grub commands, beginning with root (hd1,5), and through
loading the kernel. From there:

grub> initrd /boot/initrd<tab>.img
initrd /boot/initrd.img

And it doesn't return to the GRUB promptl

Just an observation Stan, there really is no need for a <tab> in
vmlin<tab>uz, all one word shoud suffice, and as for initrd<tab>.img,
that can be fixed to initrd.img. A bit odd those <tab>s.
