Not a mistake. With negative ground, electrolysis would cause the metal in the conductors to migrate away from the wire. This goes back to the days when telegraph and telephone lines used a single wire (often iron) working against ground, instead of a pair of wires. With positive ground that's not a problem.

These days, polarity is not an issue as the 48V is used to run a switching power supply.
