This looks like the villain. But surely, it has to run to check whether there
are any pending cron jobs? Interestingly, the above "crontab -u root -l"
command doesn't list the rsnapshot jobs that are run as user root :~(

No, that job does nothing, but oputput "test" to the mail subsystem, ie, mailing one email per minute with the line "test" in it.

Yes, that's the culprit.

Being root, run "crontab -e", and remove the line.
