This looks fine - when you look at openSUSEs partitioning suggestion,
does /dev/sda4 go beyond the last cylinder at 9479?

I hesitat to even look to find out. How can sda4 be even close to the last
cylinder, when sda5, 6, and 7 are near the beginning.

As I just told jdd, I'm going to choose to install on sda6 and sda7. If it
works, I will be very relieved. If it doesn't, the machine is going back
to the Dell importer.

It probably ought to go back anyway, unless they can supply a debugged
BIOS.
