So the extra disk (/dev/sdl) is accepted, and not defined as spare.
According to what google tells me, i should now have been able to do a
resize, in my case a resize_reiserfs.

However, resize_reiserfs says:
# resize_reiserfs /dev/md1
/dev/md1 already is of the needed size. Nothing to be done

Am i forgetting something obvious (besides too much coffee and too
little sleep) ??

do you perhaps need to reboot in order to recognize the new parameters of the
device?
(or, if you can umount your filesystem, use mdadmin to stop the device and
remove it, and then start it again?)
