Now seriously, usually files have a "magic header" which can be used to
indentify the file type, in this case seems the rpm is corrupted or you
need to update rpm first.

Looking that part, this question is more suitable for opensuse-factory
mailing list.. if you are running openSUSE 10.3 and trying to upgrade
to factory/11.0 , then you have to upgrade rpm first, then upgrade
zypper and libzypp then the whole system using zypper dist-upgrade.

Hmm - wierd. No plans to use factory or 11.0 sources here. I am currently
running smart update to see if that works any better/worse.
