More confused now. I installed the file I downloaded into /opt/firefox. I run /opt/firefox/firefox and ask for help firefox. It says this is i686 (x86_64). But, if I ask "file /opt/firefox/firefox-bin" it says "ELF 32 bit".

/usr/bin/firefox

if you get a similar result, it means that "/usr/bin/firefox" is the one that executes, not the one in opt. You may be running the one in /opt but the help in /usr. Who knows. Run "ps afx|less" to learn what binaries you are really running.
