I stored mail boxes to a CD, thinking it would be easy to read that old
mail directly; but it was not possible, because mbox files are opened in
R/W mode. Pity mozilla etc can't be convinced to open them in RO mode if
needed.

in fact it's more and more probelmatic now than many people send big images (7Mpx cameras an an horror, specially cheap ones, horrible photos, maximum storage waste!)!

Yes. It is possible to remove attached files from mails, but not all clients can do it.

One of the things about CDs is that they can be compressed with zisofs, and compression with mail achieves high compression rates.
