They may not give a clue as to what they are, but they're not quite
senseless. From what I can see, the names are constructed from the
md5sum of the original image, and stored in .png format. Of course, that
won't help you in trying to find a pattern to their names, since there
essentially isn't one.

Obviously, they have a meaning to the machine. There will be an index somewhere. The checksum is to ensure the file has not changed meanwhile.

But they have no meaning to the human, no easy way to know which file they refer to unless you do have a look at them. Deleting them all is OK, they will be recreated as needed.
