Have a look at shred - 'man shred' will explain how to use it...

If you are to toss the drive: Use a 10 mm drill .
Just make a couple of holes thru the whole case and you are done.
Fast, secure and cheep...

I've done that procedure at work where a bank left some workstations to
be disposed of.
A nice 10 mm drill, redecorate the case to resemble a swiss cheese.. and
presto!
Nothing is getting of THAT drive in a hurry...
It's more fun to set the hdd up on a fence or rock and target practice
on it with a Colt .45 or .223 rifle.
And take care to not produce ricochets back at you.

Never had it happen to me. Makes a pretty mess of the hdd, heh. Every bullet has gone through and through, even with hollow points. The .223 would be even far, far less likely to ricochet, and if it did, the bullet or particles of it would have to have enough energy to travel back the hundred yards it came from (assuming one fired from a hundred yards...a rifle wouldn't be much use if one only practiced with it at 10 yards or less).

Youtube has a vid of a guy shooting a Barret .50, which
somehow manages to come back and nail him in the head.

Fortunately it had lost enough energy/momentum that it
didn't penetrate his skull, but it did knock him off of
the seat of the shooting bench that he was using.
