I use rsync to back up a number of directories on the server to an external
usb hard drive. For example, the virtual machines on the server are in the
directory /vmware.

The external usb hard drive automounts to /media/disk and has 5 directories.

so that I get full backups for 5 different days.

If I su to root and type the command

rsync -av --delete /vmware /media/disk/4Thursday

it works perfectly. In my root cronfile I have the follwoing command for

35 23 * * 4 /usr/bin/rsync -av --delete /vmware /media/disk/4Thursday

In /var/mail I get the following error message

From root@xxxxxxxxxx Thu Mar 13 23:35:01 2008
Return-Path: <root@xxxxxxxxxx>

building file list ... done
rsync: mkdir "/media/disk/4Thursday" failed: No such file or directory (2)
rsync error: error in file IO (code 11) at main.c(509) [receiver=2.6.8]
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (8 bytes received so far) [sender]
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(459)

There certainly is a directory named /media/disk/4Thursday. I get the same
error message for other days as well, just using Thursday as an example.

The server is running 64bit opensuse 10.2.

It seems to be related to the usb external hard drive, as the cron command

20 22 * * * /usr/bin/rsync -av --delete /vmware /storage/backup

works perfectly. this simply backs up the vmware directory to a different
partition on the server.

Any ideas?
