I had the same problem with a 3.5" Maxtor 160GB via USB. As it turns
out, many people did so too. I had no problems with other capacities,
only 160 GB.

So, try another capacity, you problems should be over then.

UMS= USB Mass Storage (also known as MSC- Mass Storage Class). A Flash
drive is a ums device.

What is the model of your external Maxter drive?
