What I get for the Xorg log is as follows (grep pertinent (EE) (WW) comments):

(II) Primary Device is: PCI 02:00:0
(II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Version Identifier:8.32.5
(II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Release Identifier: LGDr8.32g1
(II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Build Date: Dec 12 2006 17:18:27
(II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Build Information:
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:2:0:1) found
(--) Chipset ATI RADEON 9600 Series (RV360 4152) found

drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 7, (OK)
drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID PCI:2:0:0
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is 7, (OK)
drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 7
drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports PCI:2:0:0
(EE) AIGLX error: dlsym for __driCreateNewScreen_20050727 failed
(/usr/lib/dri/ undefined symbol: __driCreateNewScreen_20050727)
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
(II) Loading local sub module "GLcore"
(II) LoadModule: "GLcore"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//
(II) Module GLcore: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for, module version = 1.0.0
ABI class: X.Org Server Extension, version 0.3

It appears to be related to AIGLS error (dlsym for_driCreateNewScreen...) with
undefined symbols (logic vs syntax?). Hence fall back to Mesa software
rendering. If needed I can paste the whole Xorg.0.log or attach as text

Cheers, Curtis.
