After a failed login, switch to a text login (ctrl-alt-F1), log in, and have a
look at the file .xsession-errors in the home directory of the user. I'll lay
good odds it will have some sort of crash in there

By the way, if you're using an alpha, you are by definition a beta tester, so
you really should put these bug reports in bugzilla.novell.com
