instable system

My SuSE-9.2 system is quite unstable.
It freezes often, sometimes more than once a day.
Both mouse and keyboard are dead, then, and only cutting power helps.
Sometimes, I can detect the upcoming instability, some programs becoming
irresponsive. When I then shutdown, the shutdown process breaks off in a
segmentation fault:

/etc/init.d/boot.d/K15boot-localfs: line 43: nnnnn Segmentation fault \
umount -avt noproc,nonfs,nosubfs....failed
Oops: umount failed :-( --trying to remount readonly...

At that point nothing happens anymore.
My system:

Linux servalys 2.6.8-24.11-default #1 Fri Jan 14 13:01:26 UTC 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz, memory 1GB

Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda5 reiserfs 10G 3.5G 6.6G 35% /
tmpfs tmpfs 502M 28K 502M 1% /dev/shm
/dev/hda6 ext3 5.0G 705M 4.0G 15% /home
tissot:/store nfs 115G 41G 74G 36% /store

I don't know where to look or what to monitor.
I hope somebody has a suggestion...
