xhost +localhost

Then it worked. But this doesn't work on the other machine.

did you try 'kdesu firefox' or 'sudo firefox' or 'sux firefox' or
logging into an X session as root?

1. I never run X sessions as root.
2. I use sux at a Konsole prompt to become root with the ability to run X programs, to install systemwide any applications that have GUI installers such as OOo, Mozilla, and Fx.
3. Then I run those programs as user.

Thanks for input.
