Evening Michael -

I'll reply in-line as I find it easier.

Presumably you have it connected to an IDE controller.

Of course, secondary slave; Perhaps this is the problem and if I move it to primary the problem might go away. I'll have to give that a go and see what happens.. The boot up display shows it as "zip 250 , ATAPI, floppy", but the bios setup shows it as "secondary slave [ IOMEGA ZIP 250 ATAPI]"

When you booted, did you see where it was assigned?

no

Do you perhaps have SCSI emulation on that drive?

no

Which IDE controller is it connected to? Primary or secondary? Master or
Slave?

Secondary slave

If it helps, and I doubt it will, here is the fstab

/dev/sdb3 / ext2 defaults 1 1
/dev/sdb1 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2
/dev/cd-rw /cd-rw auto rw,noauto,user,exec 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0
/dev/dvd /dvd auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0
/dev/hdd /dvd-r auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
/dev/fd0 /floppy auto noauto,user 0 0
/dev/fd1 /floppyold auto noauto,user 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/sda1 /windows/C vfat noauto,user 0 0
/dev/sdb2 swap swap defaults 0 2
/dev/hdc4 /zip vfat noauto,user,exec 0 0
/dev/hde1 /hardcard auto rw,noauto,user,exec 0 0
/dev/sde1 /mnt/MMC-SD auto noauto,user,sync 0 0
/dev/sdf1 /mnt/SmartMedia auto noauto,user,sync 0 0
/dev/sdg1 /mnt/CompactFlash auto noauto,user,sync 0 0
/dev/sdh1 /mnt/MemoryStick auto noauto,user,snyc 0 0

I switched the bios from "auto" to "zip 250" for the secondary slave tonight to see if that would make a difference; it didn't. Trying to mount the drive still gives the error message "mount: /dev/hdc4 is not a valid block device".

Moved the mobo, drives, controller and video card , and everything else from one box to another. In other words, the ONLY thing I changed was the case and power supply. The zip 250 worked perfectly in the original box and was identified in fstab as:

/dev/hdc4 /zip vfat noauto, user, exec 0 0 and a mount point of /zip.

In this new box trying to mount it gives a "mount: /dev/hdc4 is not a valid block device. If I alter /etc/fstab to change the zip identifier to the more common hdd4, I get "mount: /dev/hdd4: can't read superblock"

Can anyone give me some advice as to what's going on?
