Etherlink III critical bug in 9.1

Hi All,

On known-good hardware, which has co-operated flawlessly with all SuSE
versions from 6.2-9.0, 9.1 can't find its 3com Etherlink III network card on
boot. The message 'waiting for mandatory device' appears, then a 15 second
countdown, then 'failed'. When booted, ifconfig only knows about lo0.

Connectivity can only be established by going into YaST - Network Devices and
confirming that the details for eth0 are correct (they are - the system does
know how the card should be configured, it just can't find it when booting).
Once you click OK, eth0 appears and works.

This is not a machine that is left up, and of course even if it were things
like remote administration involving a reboot would be out. This strikes me
as a critical bug, anyone getting better results?
