To whom it my concern

Question : Is it possible to move your harddisk from exicisting position to another on same box.
Answer : Sure....but some strict rules apply.

IMPORTEND NOTE : All the following is given as is and may/may not work on your sytem.
Please be advised that this operation have risks and that I will not be responsible for any mishaps. Please read this...and make sure you understand the risks.

Example : To move hda to hdb.

The following MUST be done BEFORE shutdown.

FIRST : make copies of.../etc/fstab.....the bootloader.../etc/lilo.conf or /boot/grub/menu.lst...(the one you are using)

IMPORTEND suggestion.....any lines you must change...comment them....then copy make your changes in this new line....if problems should arise you will be glad for the extra effort.

SECOND : Load /etc/fstab in your favourite editor...all references to hda must be changed to hdb.(keep in mind above suggestion)

THIRD : Suggest to comment existing stanza...copy it and then make your changes....... Load /boot/grub/menu.lst ( /etc/lilo.config) in your favourite editor...all references to hda must be changed to hdb.(keep in mind above suggestion)...if you made changes to lilo.conf...Please run /sbin/lilo -v. No need to do anything else if changes in menu.lst.

FOURTH : Shutdown..........swap harddisk...boot.

NOTE : In the above example...the disk moves from master to master.
If the changes you want to make involves moving from...say..slave to master or visa versa...please make sure that you change the link settings on the disk.

NOTE: Have done the above a few times and with success every time....that may/may not be the same with your effort.

NOTE : Moving between boxes involves more...hardware differences etc...did not have success in that test.

Suse friends...Enjoy
