od -c doesn't work on directories.

I found 'ls -b' gives me the same data.

Unfortunately, I still don't know how to get rid of it.

Your find suggestion gives:

/tmp # find /tmp -exec rm -- '{}' \;
rm: `/tmp' is a directory
rm: `/tmp/.X11-unix' is a directory
rm: `/tmp/.ICE-unix' is a directory
rm: `/tmp/.qt' is a directory
