Sounds similar to a problem I had after I installed SuSE 8.1. This arose
because the drives now operate under SCSI emulation, but some links hadn't
been made correctly. You might need to do the following:

# ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd
# ln -sf /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom
# ln -sf /dev/sr1 /dev/cdrecorder

Depending, obviously, on what your drives are called.

Or, it might be something else entirely!
