Yes, I started mysql with rcmysql start
Is that the same as the mysqld?

Here is an example:
# mysql -u root -pPASS
ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES)

and another:

# mysqladmin -u root -pPASS status
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: YES)'

Does this look good?
