shmfs is a shared memory file system. It is not swap. swap space is hard disk
space to be used when the RAM memory fills up. Using RAM memory for swap is a
contradiction in terms.

If your swap partition won't mount you could try running "mkswap /dev/hda2"
followed by "swapon -a". If nothing else it should give you some informative
error messages (hopefully).
