We may be having the same problem - our server just now crashed again,
fifteen hours after the last reboot. I had vmstat running at the time, and
the last few entries show the buffer space dropping off alarmingly and the
system cpu use shooting up,

We crashed after the last entry. Is there any documentation out there of
possible memory leaks in the 2.4.18 (Suse Linux 8.0 Pro) kernel? We're
thinking of upgrading from 2.4.18-57 to 2.4.18-212, but we're a bit worried
about possible ramifications. If you've been running stable with the latter
kernel, perhaps we should make the switch.
Thanks to everyone with the patience to read these missives - this list has
been extremely helpful.

looks like a common problem of the 2.4.18 (s8) and also 2.4.19 (s8.1)
kernel -
got the same problem here and we're not alone ;-) .. try 2.4.18 from suseftp
update/8.0/lsb (something like this) ... runs stable here ... tracking the
freeze of the kernel is really hard i guess because no oops or any
var/log/messages is written before it bombs down ...
