looks like a common problem of the 2.4.18 (s8) and also 2.4.19 (s8.1) kernel -
got the same problem here and we're not alone ;-) .. try 2.4.18 from suseftp
update/8.0/lsb (something like this) ... runs stable here ... tracking the
freeze of the kernel is really hard i guess because no oops or any
var/log/messages is written before it bombs down ...
