No you're not missing anything about modules. But rpm works that way. the bug,
if you can call it that, is in the procedures. If you're going to use those
procedures on that web page and expect to have any use of the .old-files you

I guess I'd agree it is a bug in the procedure. Why they say to backup
vmlinuz and initrd is beyond me if you cannot boot the previous kernel
and get it to load modules. Anyway no real problem since the new kernel
appears to work OK. I'll keep your workaround for future reference.
