There have been various threads on DVD on SuSE, and different things seem to work for various people. However, last night I managed to actually view a DVD on Linux.

The most recent packages (Xine 0.9.8) are at:
http://cambuca.ldhs.cetuc.puc-rio.br/~jcm/skyblade/XINE-0.9.8/
and I chose i686.RPMS.
The short advice is to download and install everything except the w32 codec - a total of around 1.7Mb. Although it doesn't say so, for instance, you need to have libdvdread-devel installed in order to use libdvdcss (thanks to (UK) Linux Magazine for that titbit - my previous attempt a few days ago foundered on a "no input file" error which this sorted out).

To get sound, you have to start xine with audio enabled, ie:
xine -A oss
or
xine -a libvorbis
or whatever takes your fancy - again, thanks to LM for this.

There is a slight visual artifact on the default control panel, such that the quit and setup icons (on the lower left-hand edge) are actually hidden under the d4d button, but they appear if you roll the mouse over them.

This may be of some help to others who are still DVDless.
