do you really need mod_backhand? if you dont it seems from the logs you
posted that removing it would fix your problems.

You said:

You bet it is!

Apparently since October.

I am still having the same error messages (below) every two seconds.

There is a thread about this:

http://lists.backhand.org/pipermail/backhand-users/2001-October/000500.html

This seems to be a fix:

in httpd.conf, change the lines to:

UnixSocketDir /var/lib/backhand
# MulticastStats 128.220.221.255:4445
MulticastStats 127.0.0.1:4445
# MulticastStats 225.220.221.20:4445,1
# AcceptStats 128.220.221.0/24
AcceptStats 127.0.0.0/24

# Note that you _must_ configure the MulticastStats/AcceptStats directives,
# otherwise apache will segfault!

Without that change and a standard installation (with going through
hoops about ssl), the server does not work and logs an error message
every two seconds.

starting with apachectl works for now, starting with /etc/rc.d/apache start
still has a ssl issue and problems with permissions of /var/log/httpd.

here are the messages without the above change:

[Sun Mar 3 11:00:31 2002] [notice] waiting for mod_backhand moderator to start
