Hi,

I had tried some unsuccesfull kernel updates too, but since I read the
sdb article (ftpkernel.html), I have no problems; It tells you to do
like this:

1. Download new kernel to disk
2. Backup you old stuff:

# cp /boot/vmlinuz /boot/vmlinuz.old
# cp /boot/initrd /boot/initrd.old

3. Install new kernel:

# rpm -Uhv k_deflt.rpm

Finally, create new initial ramdisk: # mk_initrd
and rerun lilo: # lilo

When I do like this, I have no problems. Don't forget, that the default
kernel is pentium optimized, for an Athlon use the 386 kernel.

Cheers .... Wolfi
