the first point that should be checked is your cable.... if you want to link 2 boxes directly, you must have a crossed cable...
the wires should go this way...

end 1 end 2
1 3
2 4
3 1
4 2
5 7
6 8
7 5
8 6

Then you can go on with testing your network...
