Just to explain a little misunderstanding: The listing above is from a
system where the IDE CD-writer works OK. Changes on SuSE 7.1, 2.4.2:

1. I appended 'append = "hdc=ide-scsi"' to /etc/lilo.conf:

image = /boot/vmlinuz
label = linux
root = /dev/hda3
initrd = /boot/initrd
append = "hdc=ide-scsi"

2. I ran "lilo"

3. In /etc/modules.conf, I changed
alias scsi_hostadapter off
to
alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
