Compiling 2.4 vs 2.2 kernel (SuSE 7.1)

I've been having a lot of trouble getting a SuSE 7.1 system that works
with my old, reliable AMD k6 200 system (previously running redhat 6.1)
- networking is all messed up. I'm thinking about compiling the kernel
and wonder whether I'd be better off with 2.2 or 2.4

Of course, in principle I'd prefer 2.4, but I don't need it. I've
always use precompiled kernels in the past, and I'm wondering if trying
2.4 is asking for trouble.

Suggestions?

Thanks,

bw
