Concern has been expressed in several recent threads on this list about the
dangers of incompatibilities between the various Linux distributions.

There is a long-standing project called the Linux Standard Base (LSB)
project that addresses this risk. It is supported by almost all of the
major players in the Linux arena, including SuSE, Red Hat and Corel.

This project first came into prominence at the March 1999 LinuxWorld
Conference and Expo. Since that date it has been very active. A visit to:

http://www.linuxbase.org/

hows the following mission statement:

"The goal of the Linux Standard Base (LSB) is to develop and promote a set
of standards that will increase compatibility among Linux distributions and
enable software applications to run on any compliant Linux system. In
addition, the LSB will help coordinate efforts to recruit software vendors
to port and write products for Linux."

Those wishing to become involved in this important effort may find more
information on the Web site.

Those wishing to inform themselves may search for 'lsb' on LinuxToday.com
and find dozens of press stories on the LSB over the past year and a half.
