[opensuse-translation] Certain things never changes

Translation breakage keeps to be a problem for community translator due to the lack of respect of freezes and of the tendency to include upstream translations in the openSUSE tree. Hanging around in the translation channel, I have just found out that even for 11.1 things didn't change: - Packagekit translations are still there, while the product is upstream. Again, if it is untranslated, it doesn't really matter. OpenSUSE decided to go with it when not ready, and it really seems you are asking the community to make it ready for SLE with this behaviour. - KDE 4 backports and fixes added hundreds of strings after freeze, in the desperate attempt to bring KDE 4 at a usable state, when clearly it is not ready yet, and the planning of 11.1 release doesn't match KDE 4.2 release plan. - YaST fixes, improvements and development added about other 100 strings to translators again. While fixes are welcome, you should really stop changing hundreds of strings when fixing a bug, which is often cosmetic (don't tell me that changing comma positions, or dots or using synonyms is not cosmetic, please). I know I pointed out this issue many times when I was a translator myself, but I consider it a real problem when working in a community. It is a real form of lack of respect for those who invest their spare time in translation work, to see it partly destroyed by the lack of care of developers, who repeatedly misbehaved on this side. If a freeze is decided, it _must_ be respected as strictly as possible. And if you need to fix a plasmoid at the last minute, or to change one hundred of strings in yast, it simply means you planned it wrong, and that functionality _should_not_make_it_ in the distribution. I asked in the past, without seeing any improvement, for a better planning in this field. It is _the_ condition to attract new contributors and to _keep_ them involved. Frustrating people with the current way of doing is not really working, and is demotivating them. The new strings in support.po and many others in this file appears to be related to SLED/SLES not openSUSE at all, like these: <big>Opening Novell Support Center</big> \n To start a web browser that opens the Novell Support Center Portal, use Open Novell Support Center.\n You can then open a Service Request with Novell Technical Support. Hi, I need to talk ;) I noticed today a problem, that I thought is specific to my current work, but I figured it's a general problem we have since ages and never noticed: We have msgctx "Name(konsolehere.desktop)" msgid "Open Terminal Here" msgstr "" Looks harmless. Problem here: kde3's german has a different translation than kde4's german. And it's not just one example, it's almost everywhere. And I have no idea how to solve the problem - I need to write _one_ translation. Splitting into even more pot files is no solution either as then somewhen later we have to pick - and all we have is "konsolehere.desktop". Anyone a brilliant idea? At least the good news: by now I can sort by package name, so I can define which package should win. But will this be good enough? [opensuse-translation] Backported strings from KDE4.2 on KDE4.1 (11.1)

Hello Everybody, Calling you from 11.0 beta3. Nice beta indeed. I was wondering where were taken the translations from back-ported features from 4.2 in openSUSE's 4.1 for next release (factory). Example: The folder view is not the one from 4.1 but the one from 4.2. Same for auto-hide panel, etc. Does oS takes the translations from the trunk branch from KDE's SVN or is it in one of the lcn po's? If yes which? Because despite having translated the "update-kde4..." po file, a string as "Desktop Folder" in folder view still appears in English in my locale (wa). Thanks in advance for clarifying. Now we have the first (and the last?) slide-show update and a small patterns enhancement. For savefty reasons I also merged all the other files. It would be great, if you could take a final look because we are heading towards beta4. hi. debian doesn't want to install properly on my aspire one, but opensuse do, so i guess i'm switching. [opensuse-translation] Mean bug in desktop-translation files

Hi, Martin Schlander noticed that upstream fixes wouldn't be picked up even though they should have been. Due to this I investigated and noticed a mean script bug that must have slipped in while splitting the desktop po file into several smaller. Now I fixed it and this means you'll see tons of "upstream fixes" that might suprise you. You can review commit 39213 to check, but be warned: you can not fix them yourself - if the translation is really bad you have to get it fixed upstream (or in tough cases file a bugzilla.novell.com to get it patched out of the desktop file). [opensuse-translation] What does the -L means? (support.po)

Hi everyone, can someone tell me what the -L means: "A full file list using find from the root of the filesytem. -L, fs-files.txt" The one option I'd imagin is that it stands for an "find / -L" but then, the . before it is incorrect?! Regards Michael
