Hi folks, I'm writing up an article with the aim of encouraging non technical people to participate in projects. I'm trying to keep the tone very light and fun. It's just a dump of ideas right now and needs to be structured. I have no idea where I'll submit it. Possibly Linux.com, or maybe a print magazine (Linux Format?) Please feel free to add your suggestions/comments and if you add much material, leave your name for due credit. If you have any good quality, publishable images taken at events these would be great too. If anyone has a non-technical partner who regularly participates in FOSS work I'd be very happy to hear their comments. Hi all, Some days ago on the IRC it poped out that I would be writing a small article for openSUSE Build Service. In the past days I've took the opportunity to take a closer look into OBS from a scope that isn't mine, the one from a developer/packager. I've signed up for the opensuse-buildservice list, picked a cool soundtrack (Moderat/Aparat/Paul Kalkbrenner), and two packages. notify-osd > a replacement for notification-daemon[1], and to make it more interesting picked up leolik patch[2] alongside, which has been criticized hard by Mark Shuttleworth. This patch allows the bubble of notify-osd to be customized by the user, functionality that Shuttleworth doesn't want out off the box in Ubuntu. A good candidate for all the other distro's, lets make the difference ;) notifyconf[3] > A small tool to customize notify-osd written in Qt (go figure that out). I've struggled, squeeled, but also conquered and the packages in my home repo[4]. I'm going to pick a cool project and then try to make them through to openSUSE:Contrib. During all this process I've been taking notes, gimping for help here and there and checking out the problems usually people have and making notes of the documents people point to me. Once I've finished the process, getting my packages approved or not into the repo, I'll start scribing the article (I would assume depending on answering times this would take 1 or 2 days more). So here's the deal: * Andreas, want to be my wingman on this? I am aware you have in your possession some interviews to be processed. We can use them. I would also need a small talk over IRC if possible (10/20 minutes) so I know how you want to present OBS, to whom you want it to be appealing to, and pretty much the stuff you want to promote. For the 'new user' experience I'll base it on my own adventure. Also any interesting information you can provide would be great. * Marketing Team, is it possible that we create a simple Marketing Banner/Badge, whatever to create a wiki template for Marketing articles? (flag the article, print the article and inform the readers our Marketing is alive and kickin'). * Artwork Team, could you provide such banner? * Wiki Team, could we have such template? I would also like to know what would be the best place to file this article on the current wiki structure. * Editorial Powers, need someone to review it later, and to make it more english friendly. I have really no schedule for this (only proves that I'm a poor marketeer), but I would point for a final release soon before the conference (as it can be used in the conference). I'm running some extra qualitative research also through some interviews with current packagers/contributors to get some more material to support some claims. PiratePad coming soon. Dear all, During November {22,23,26} I'll be giving a small introduction to Free Software and GNU/Linux in the local high school. This will cover 43 students on the IT branch. Regarding the event itself it's organized as follows (it's pretty much informal): Session #1 - Introduction (50 + 50 mins) - Introduce Free Software; - Install a Linux Distribution (was actually thinking on using openSUSE 11.3, free choice GNOME/KDE). - Software Repositories and Package management. Session #2 - Free Desktop and Productivity (50 + 50 mins) - Configure and tweak GNOME/KDE; - Introduction to productivity applications; Session #3 - Collaboration & Aftermath - Collaboration across Free Software; - Developing skills and interacting with FOSS Communities; - Aftermath (includes grabbing all the feedback we can use, small group session informal talk with the students). The dates are 90% sure, but they might be changed, as there were concerns in trying to make this on a week where they don't have evaluation tests and this part of the trimester is complicated for students. Either way, if there are changes, they will be decided during the next week. From this event we earn: * Feedback; * A cool article for our wiki/blog sphere; * Some local advertising on local newspapers (I can't grant this, but I will push it forward, including on the radio if possible, since this actually for the benefit of the local people). * Some photos, though I don't legally if we can use them or not because they are children (minors), and as a marketeer I would hate to make usage of them. I would probably dodge this issue by asking to have them posted on the school website. What I could use: * Installation Media. * USB sticks (I have those sorted out, a local corporation will sponsor those, all installs and such are going to be made on USB sticks, one per student). Can I get some media shipped to the school? I would rather have it shipped to the Administration of the School than exactly to me. I do have stickers I brought from the conference, so I will be using them as well. Dear marketing team! PLEASE help us get the message out on the successful openSUSE conference. Submit it to your local and to international websites and magazines. I wrote a little piece you could use as a short intro: Last week the openSUSE conference happened in Nuremberg, Germany. Instead of deciding to fork a major desktop, the conference focused on 'collaboration across borders' and the results are showing. Folks, SCALE (Southern California Linux Expo) Call for Papers is now open until December 13, 2010. SCALE will be in Los Angeles February 25-27, 2011. I would encourage anyone interested in giving talks about openSUSE to submit their papers to this event. There's lots to talk about openSUSE, so don't be shy!
