I don't see the need for any special handling of this case. As
patterns aren't 'installed' anymore (but derived from the installed
packages), removal of a package - be it through another pattern or
directly - might 'break' any other pattern.
If a user wants to ensure a specific set of packages is installed,
package locks should be used. Then removal of a locked package will
result in an error.
