Another confusion due to lack of documentation :-). The repodata_search function actually _can_ retrieve an attribute of a resolvable. Searching only happens if you leave the solvable id or the attribute id to 0.

Thanks Duncan. Michael pointed me to this (well, currently hidden) functionality for repodata_search.
