In principle, yes.

4. apply patch (command was pending, not executed) < this is what concerned me
whether I'm doing it right.

Save the patch to FILENAME.patch .
Go into the radeonhd directory.
# patch -p1 < FILENAME.patch

The log indicates that you haven't applied the patch correctly (no
"Arbitration" logging). You can verify whether you have done anything by "git
diff" - it should print out all changes you've done to the source. patch gets
the patch always from STDIN, thus the redirection.

It seems that monitor isn't recognized at all in the bad commit while in the
good it is. So then it just guesses what kind of resolution to put on screen.

Yes, the driver thinks it is not allowed to do DDC because the I2C line is used
by the hardware itself. Now we have to check how to circumvent this.
