Hmm,
David,
Could you cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep idle
That's what mine used to do. The same kind of behaviour happens when the
MC is not idle.
If it shows nothing, include your whole Xorg.log.

With the build of the new driver, X tries to start and locks up with a
black screen. The Xorg.0.log says:
screen nowadays.

Matthias,
That's not the problem. Just reinstalling the latest standard radeonhd
release, fixes the problem. The issue is the recent changes to the driver in
the git repository. For the RS690M card, the recent changes to the driver
simply cause X to blackscreen and lock when you attempt to start kdm. This
behavior began with the git pull I did on July 25, 2009. Before that, the
build of radeonhd worked fine. Right now I'm running on:
[12:14 alchemy:/home/david] # pmq | grep radeonhd
xf86-video-radeonhd 1.2.5-1
and everything is working fine.
When I say "blackscreen" I mean the laptop display looks like it is
unpowered or unitialized. No slight light-gray backlight you expect from the
initial "blank" screen on X start. With the changes to the driver, the screen
looks like it is unpowered and off. I'll post my build logs so you can look
to see if they hold a clue:
