Very interesting: the Debian CD based distro seems to contain an old
driver...
In the meanwhile I tried with the DVD based distro: it works.
IMHO, Ubuntu seems more uptodate than Debian.

Note that the same PC correctly works with Ubuntu 9.04.
You have the 1.2.1 version of radeonhd installed. This is very, very old.
Please update to the latest version.
