Just one more idea. Does your RS690 (X1200) have audio engine? If so
and if you have access to some HDMI TV, you can try not-yet-applied
patch:
http://lists.opensuse.org/radeonhd/2009-04/msg00265.html
which should let you transmit audio in HDMI cable.
