Well I got radeonhd 1.2.5 working with the stock xorg 1.5.2 that comes
with openSUSE 11.1.  Turns out all I had to do was not try to install
the Catalyst driver, which messes with a number of xorg.conf entries
to the point that neither 1.2.4 nor 1.2.5 radeonhd versions work.  I
just added the two lines from Yang Zhao's skeletal xorg.conf that
enable DRI and EXA, and suddenly it works as well as it does in
Windows (better IMO, since it isn't Windows).

Thank you to everyone who helped with this.  Now I'll have proper
functionality while I wait for the PCIe RAID card to arrive so I can
use the NVidia GTX295 that covers all my onboard SATA ports.  Any
motherboard that makes me store my $500+ video card on the shelf in an
anti-static bag instead of in an x16 PCIe slot needs to be
redesigned...
